A Penchant for Pretty Packaging

There's a major part to my beauty obsession that doesn't have anything to do with pigment, color, changing the way I look, or taking care of my body at all. Actually, there are two parts. The first is too profound and philosophical for this post, so I'll spare you the brain strain. The second, though, roots from an obsession with pretty packaging. It's unfortunate, really, because my heart is drawn to any beauty product even if it lacks (or extremely lacks) effectivity. Luckily, though, the self discipline of ballet is migrating to my spending habits and it takes a lot for me to actually buy something. And I'm also fortunate that the few products above with swoon-worthy cases and lids are rather effective, too--but that part is for another day.

Fragrance brands tend to take the cake when it comes to beautiful casing. Diptyque is a prime example; their candle containers are so gorgeous, most keep the votives even when they're wax-less. Tied is Jo Malone. Their fragrance bottles are certainly simple, but also stunning with a heavy weight (and price...eeek), silver knobbed top, and gold accents. But whether it's candles or fragrance, it's fortunate that the molecules being spritzed or burned are aesthetically pleasing to the senses, too. On the makeup front, the packaging on the Tarte Amazonian Clay Blushes earns another spot on my list. After a recent overhaul, the compacts now feature a "Tarte," gold embossment and an overall color the same as that on the inside. That should go to show you how much I adore the shade Tipsy. NARS is another common favorite, consistent with matte black finishing whether it's a foundation or eyeshadow primer. Unfortunately, the matte factor seems to attract grime rather easily, but it makes showing a newbie to the light even more wondrous and it's nothing a wipe down can't fix. On the other end of the spectrum--showing light, that is, in contrast to the overtly black facet--is RMS Beauty. The milky, glass packaging makes what is inside visible, but the clean lid with the simple RMS logo looks stunning on any vanity (or set of Muji acrylic storage). Just like RMS, REN Clean Skincare has learned the way to a skincare lovers's heart, especially with the clear face that makes it easy to see how much cleanser, mask, or moisturizer you have left so you're not stuck without any in desperate times. Their ranges are also color-coded, making finding your product match a breeze. Essie, too, has the white look nailed; in fact, I'd say that the packaging is a large constituent as to why it is my favorite nail polish brand. And, last, although I don't stare at it often, the packaging on all Herbivore Botanicals products has me swooning. Forget the natural origin, the box on their Blue Clay Soap is what had me drawn in the first place.

I wish I didn't have such a lame excuse for my overzealous beauty stash, but, while I feel guilty, at least I'll have some nice faces to look at.

  1. You totally forgot Aesop! I'm such a fool for their packaging. Same goes for the Chanel les Beiges powder. It's a powder that basically has no effectivity apart from the fact that the compact is rather gorgeous..

  2. I'm a FOOL for pretty packaging. Diptyque and Jo Malone both caught my eye in the past because I just knew how pretty they would look on my dresser. I still treat myself to a Diptyque Mini now and again - I currently have Mimosa and Feu de Bois waiting in the wings to be set alight!

  9. I just finished up my REN toner this morning and was admiring its packaging. I love clean, minimal packaging, but I also adore really unique packaging, like vintage lipstick cases.

  11. Ah, I did! I only own their Parsley Seed Mask, and since it's my second tube, I think the packaging has lost some of its lust since it's now a staple in my drawer. And Chanel's packaging is truly a beaute! x

  14. I agree. Simple and ornate are on opposite ends of the spectrum, but they both run on the axis of stunning. x

  15. Haha! Half of my stash consists of Weng-influenced purchases, anyway, so I'd say that's a true statement. x
